UUID v4 vs UUID v7 vs ULID vs NanoID
- UUID v4: 122 bits of random data; standard 36-character format for correlation IDs and tokens.
- UUID v7 (RFC 9562): 48-bit Unix millisecond timestamp + random bits. Sorts in creation order and avoids B-tree index fragmentation in PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQL Server.
- ULID: 26-character Crockford Base32 string (48-bit timestamp + 80-bit random). Lexicographically sortable, compact, and double-click selectable without hyphens.
- NanoID: Compact URL-safe identifier (
A-Za-z0-9_-), popular for short links and frontend state IDs.
